The model is approximately25 inches long and includes detailed view of the crew’s quarters, e...ngineeringspaces, helmsman’s position, anchor mechanism, and gun turret. It includes 11crewmen in operational configuration. The model was crafted in the 1970s or 1980sby expert modeler Roger Fensler. I am a modeler, and have never seen anything quite like this model of theUSSMonitor. I do not believe that it wasmade from a kit. The builder, Roger Fensler, was a very skilled “scratch”builder, and I believe it was “scratch-built”. It is a beautiful and unique additionto your Model Ship or Civil War collection!The model of the Monitor is approximately 25 inches long, 5 3/4 incheswide, and 7 ¼ inches tall (including display base). It is mounted on a sturdywooden display base, which is 28” long by 8 ½” wide. The model is in excellent condition, but does have some dust and dirt. Please examine thephotos, and ask any questions.
Background and history: The USS Monitor was the firstIronclad warship commissioned by the US Navy in the US Civil War. In 1862 itengaged in a famous naval battle with the CSS Virginia in Hampton Roads, VA.The Monitor was 171 feet in length, and it had a speed of 8 knots, and 8 inchesor armor protection. It was designed by John Ericsson. Its key feature was itsrevolving turret with two 11 inch Dahlgren guns. The guns fired a 136 poundprojectile out to 3, 600 yards. The Monitor had a complement of 49 officers andmen.
