You are bidding on a rare liddedpedestal bowl by California potter (and former Peter Voulkos student) Joel Edwards. DESCRIPTION: Th...ebowl of this museum worthy piece from Joel Edwards rests upon a beautifullyproportioned flared base. The interiorhas an expertly placed band of unglazed clay just below the angled rim on whichthe lid nestles and sits securely and beautifully balanced. The lid’s conic handle nicely accommodates fivefingers and also artfully complements the inversely shaped base. The decorative aspects of the potare equally impressive. The exteriors of both components have teal borders that“frame” two wide bands of masterfully carved abstract designs in brown (theunglazed clay body) and white slip. Theinteriors are glazed creamy white- and the center of the bowl revealsmeticulous throwing lines from the making that impart to it additional texturalrichness. This highly collectible vintagework measures 8 3/8” in diameter at the rim of the bowl and stands 5 ½”” highto the handle. It is in mint condition-no chips, cracks or repairs- and is signed in the interior of the base. This is a no reserveauction. ABOUT JOEL EDWARDS: Joel Edwardsstudied at the Brooklyn Museum School, Brooklyn, New York and received hisM.F.A. at Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, California. He was in the first group of students thatstudied with Peter Voulkos. He exhibitedat the Nationals in 1956, 1960 and 1966 and his work is in the Long BeachMuseum of Art in Long Beach, California. Asignificant but under-recognized California ceramist, Edwards has producedpowerfully expressive utilitarian pottery.
