For sale an original early-20th-century antique landscape oil painting on canvas depicting a rural river landscape with cottage, painted by listed Suffolk artist Ethel Kathleen Cole (1892-1976). The painting is signed lower left by the artist, "E. Cole". The canvas measures on the stretcher 16" by 20" inches, it is housed in the original deep set antique gilt gesso frame measuring 24" by 28" inches. Artist Biography: Ethel Kathleen Cole (British, 1892-1976). Ethel Kathleen Cole, was born at Beccles, Suffolk on 11 May 1892, to Hammond Cole (1837-1917), FRGS, in the India Service, and his wife Josephine Harriet née Johnson, who married Great Dunmow, Essex in 1877. Ethel was educated at Croydon High School and Roedean School, then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art winning 1st prize for drawing and obtained a 1st class certificate in drawing, painting and perspective. In 1911, an 18 year old art student, living at The Dene, East Grinstead, Sussex with her parents, 73 year old William and 52 year old Josephine, and two of five surviving siblings, Josephine Ella 31, born in India, and Frances Winifred 28, born at Brighton.
A landscape painter in oil and watercolour, black & white and poster artist, illustrator, lithographer and teacher. Ethel exhibited at the Grosvenor Galleries; New English Art Club; Friday Club; Redfern Galleries and the Royal Academy. Living at Clifton, Bristol 1917, Brighton 1918 and London 1919. In 1939, an art teacher, living at Flower Lodge, Chailey, Lewes, Sussex where she died on 21 June 1976, she was unmarried.

Size: Canvas on the stretcher measures 16" by 20" inches.
Framed: Housed in the original deep set antique gilt gesso frame measuring 24" by 28" inches.
Condition: The painting is in a very dirty as found condition with surface craquelure and a few small flakes, there are no holes or tears to the canvas. The frame is in a dirty and aged tarnished condition with a full length of outer length of gesso decoration missing down the left and right side and some losses to the back top edge, other marks and there are woodworm holes to the back. The photographs form part of the description, please study all the images to fully satisfy yourself as to the condition.
