A pretty neat device that really never worked out. The user would eye the sun through the scope (polarized glass would cut the amount of light coming in), then small balls (1/16th") would be released one at a time. They would fall and hit a piece of carbon cloth/carbon paper, leaving a small mark on the recording screen. 4 screens could be used to take 4 different readings. Adjusting the dial to match the mark would give a precise position reading. It's not a complete set. The full ...set is boxed, and includes a telescope for use at night when sighting on stars.
