J H Dallmeyer Petzval Portrait Brass Lens W/Waterhouse Slot this size of lens was for stereo pictures & is listed as the 'New Stereoscopic' lens, made from 1860 - 1890s. From the position of the engraving this looks post 1870. This is a small Dallmeyer Petzval Lens. The barrel is engraved "J H Dallmeyer London." There is no model or serial number.
The barrel has the Waterhouse opening but without the stops. The focal length of this Lens is 6 inches when measured from image formed to ...Waterhouse slot. The F stop derived is F5. Lens has working rack and pinion.
Lens has the typical Petzval design with 2 cemented glass on the front and 2 air spaced glass on the back. The Petzval Lens was developed by Joseph Petzval in 1840, this Lens design was to become the oldest notable Lens design in the history of photography.This is a more than 150 year old Petzval Lens, the Lens optics is remarkably clean and clear for its age with exception to balsam edge separation on the front glass see pics. Lens dimension- 3 inch height; 2¼ inch hood dia; 30mm front glass dia; 37mm back glass dia; 50mm mounting thread dia. The 4 holed mounting flange partially screws-in. Hard to find collector's Lens.
