This is an all-original Japanese Top (Osaka, Japan) .19 ignition model airplane engine with its fuel tank. I believe this engine to have been produced in about 1947 (possibly a little earlier, but I think post WW2). This low-time engine turns over smoothly with near-new compression. Top engines are uncommon, and this particular one is a variant I have not seen before. I do believe it to be all original. I have called it a "v2a" for variant 2, and the "a" because... it has some characteristics closer to the first variant than to the second variant, so I am presuming it is an early form of the second variant. I could be wrong on that, but I'll make my case for it in the following sentences. This engine has the cylinder fin configuration of the second variant, the tank design of the first, and a needle that is in my opinion original Top (and to this engine), but not like variant one or two. It does have the piston valve design (yes, piston valve!), and it has the bronze con rod, but this engine is a long stroke (I measure the stroke at about 16.5mm and the bore at about 15.8mm). So, it's a long stroke (like first variant) with a bronze con rod (as found in the square bore/stroke configuration of the second variant), with three cylinder fins below the exhaust (like second variant), and a needle not seen on either, but in my opinion pretty clearly a Top needle. Hence, I am calling it an early version of the second variant. Boy that was a little long winded for me, but I must admit I find some of these early Oriental model engines to be pretty neat. The original Top branded spark plug has cracks in the porcelain, although it is still solid. This one is a superb example for your uncommon Japanese ignition model engine collection.
