Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a beautiful, deeply carved cuckoo clock with a rare squirrels and bird case design that was produced about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of "West Germany" by "August Schwer, " one of the finest clockmakers in this region of the world. The clock works quite well h...ere and is the ideal size too measuring about 12" high (from the tip of the bird on top to the bottom of the branches on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 8 1/2" across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden woodthat is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the BlackForest. It has a beautiful blended walnut finish complete with a large, intricately carved bird on top. In addition, there is an fancy carved wooden squirrel on either side of the wooden dial; very nice! The case is adorned with five deeply hand carved wooden grape leaves and another grape leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with a metal latch. The door easily removes to allow access to the weightdriven mechanical movement produced by "Regula" and bearing the August Schwer name. A weight driven movementsimply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind theclock and cuckoo activity. The bellow whistles or tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case. When the cuckoo activity is finished, the colorful bird retreats back inside the clock, closingthe door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock and closing the door; absolutely fascinating! The clock works quite wellhere, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is not and we do not know the service history. The movement does, however, show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preservethis classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, and two heavy pinecone shaped metalweights. I've looked the clock over fairly well and find very little signs of use and I already knew it looks gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forestworkmanship and is certain to turn heads when displayed in yourhome, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, rare, hand carved German timepiece with a real legacy behind it.
