This rather unusual streamlined diner bears a striking resemblance to the work of Jack Ferris, O gauge and scale pioneer of the middle part of the last century who founded AMT - American Model Toys and Auburn Model Trains. Check out the car ends, truck side frames and the "shorty" roof that may have been produced for Ferris' toy train length cars. Ferris' shorty O gauge streamlined cars were the sensation around 1...950 and probably inspired LIONEL to produce their own version. But having said all that, I've never heard of, much less seen, a Ferris O Scale length rendition of this car. However, the following message received another ebayer may shed some light on this car:
Years back there were body extrusions floating around from the factory [where AMT trains were made] that had no windows punched in them - they were scale 80ft car sides - you had to put 2 roofs together to make a car [the roof of this car IS in 2 sections] - the roofs just slide on track of car - you could make either a fluted roof car or a smooth roof car. Also rolls of blue window material were floating around that just slid into the window track [the window glazing on this car is clear] - many vista domes appeared at that same time - the [wood] car bottom had to be cut to fit for they only had 1 car bottom.
The car up for auction is equipped with "flex" trucks and solid couplers. As the photos show it could use a little pickmeup detailing and finishing work, but "as is" is in overall good condition. Of course, there is no original box and it will be packaged in a sturdy replacement box and double boxed for safe shipment.
One final point: this is the last of these unusual cars that I have for sale.
