Per Wikipedia: "Armed Services Editions (ASEs) were small paperback books of fiction and nonfiction that were distributed in the American military during World War II. From 1943 to 1947, some 122 million copies of more than 1, 300 ASE titles were distributed to servicemembers, with whom they were enormously popular. The ASEs were edited and printed by the Council on Books in Wartime (CBW), an American non-profit organizatio...n, in order to provide entertainment to soldiers serving overseas, while also educating them about political, historical, and military issues. The slogan of the CBW was: "Books are weapons in the war of ideas."
Few of these books, which were never sold to civilians, remain today, more than 70 years later. We have found, deep in the back of a closet in our non-smoking home, a bunch of these Armed Services Edition books that originally belonged to my father, who was in the the Army Air Corps, later re-named the Air Force. We are keeping a few, but will be offering others on Ebay.
The offered book (#N-7 in the series) contains the complete Let Your Mind Alone by James Thurber. The 256 page the book (which is approximately 4" tall, 5 1/2" wide, and 3/8" thick) is completely intact and readable, but the 70+ year old pages have yellowed and are fragile. There is also significant "cracking" of the (still intact) covers, as if the book had been carried in a soldier's back pocket.
Please look closely at the photos to get a sense of the condition of this 70+ year old paperback book. Candidly, if you want to read Let Your Mind Alone, you would by better off going to a public library and getting a copy. But, if you want a great souvenir from WW II, or if you collect these hard to find Armed Services Editions, or if someone you know served and wants a memento from WW II, here's your chance.
As mentioned above, we will be offering a bunch of these Armed Services Edition books. Please look for them and please remember that we will combine shipping if you purchase more than one.
