September 24, 1863 in the 5th New York (Duryea's Zouaves). He was wounded at Petersburg, June 18, 1864, and was mustered ot June 19, 1865. He was evidently the same Thomas S. Hayes who served in the 37th New York Infantry from May, 1861 to June, 1863. (This unit was later amalgamat...ed with the veterans of the 5th New York.)The sword is marked Horstmann on the blade. The engraved blade carries martial symbols, E Pluribus Unum, and an American eagle. The scabbard is nickle silver with brass mounts. Condition: Engraving is very light, but still present. The original leather pad separating hilt from scabbard is in place. There is one dent in the scabbard, but the scabbard is not weak at that location. The drag is possibly a period replacement This sword is guaranteed to be of the Civil War period, and the officer who carried it saw service for almost the entire war, in some of the iconic battles of the Army of the Potomac.
