Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start its watch production until March 1894, having first chosen the name Columbian Watch Co. but this name was already copyrighted by the Waterbury Co. The name "Hamilton" was derived from Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the growth of Lancaster.By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant watch and during the WWI period a small lin...e of military style watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s. I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage men’s timepiece from the Hamilton firm, a BAXTER model from ca 1956 in excellent, original condition. This watch was made from 1955 to 1957 and originally retailed for $72.50 when new, equal to $690 today. It is good size for the era, featuring an excellent flared lug case. Triple-signed, its 10kt Yellow Gold filled (with stainless back) case measures 40.5mm lug tip to lug tip and 28mm in width (including the original winding crown). In inches this is just shy of 1-5/8” long by just over 1-1/8” wide. Powering this watch is its original Hamilton 747 caliber, 17 jewel manual wind mechanism, fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. The 100% original butler-finished, sterling silver dial is in excellent order, guaranteed untouched since it left the Hamilton factory and with just a few small specks of age. It features applied 18kt Solid Gold numbers and gold dot hour markers, original gold metal Lance-style hands and a round, recessed sub-seconds dial with ‘sweep’ seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12. The solid glass crystal is in excellent order with no flaws. The 10 Karat Yellow Gold filled (with stainless back) case is excellent as well, complete with swooping sides and sculpted and flared lugs. The original and matching yellow gold finished winding crown is excellent, operating smoothly. Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is excellent, stamped Stainless Steel Back – 10K Gold Filled Bezel at the edge and “HAMILTON” on the opposite side. Inside is a topnotch American mechanism signed Hamilton, [Grade] 747, 17 Jewels, Adjusted, U.S.A.. The inner case lid is stamped BAXTER - HAMILTON W. CO., LANCASTER, PA, STAINLESS STEEL BACK, 10K GOLD FILLED BEZEL, S&W with case number below. The initials “S&W” stand for Schwab & Wuischpard, a well-known American case maker. This Hammy Baxter has been fully disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly and keeps accurate time. It is fitted on a new 17mm black Teju lizard grain hand crafted calf leather strap handcrafted by Fluco, Germany. If you’ve been looking for a Retro Modern design, mid-century original Hammy I think this one is fantastic, truly excellent inside and out. Watch sizes: I provide exact case measurements in millimeters (the watch industry standard) and inches, and include a U.S. quarter in one photo as a size reference. Draw the measurements on a piece of paper to help visualize the watch on your wrist. Remember, men’s vintage watches are noticeably smaller than oversized timepieces you see today.
