August 30, 1862.  The year date came from the cover's postmark.  Letter was written by Clarence Hart to his sister, Tillie Hart, Saltsburg, Pennsylvania.  Clarence, who was a guard at the Hospital, writes about the casualties at the Second Battle of Bull Run.  Letter was transcribed by jkpaper27305 and reads as follows:
..Casparis Hospital, Washington D.C., Aug. 3...0 [1862] Dear Sister,  I now sit down, perhaps the first time, to write you a letter. I am in the best of health, never enjoying better. All of our company are well except Derby, and he is getting better. I am still at this hospital, but don't know how long we will be here. It is a fine place to be, and not hard work. All that I have to do is that I see that the men go on guard at the right time and be here when they want to send men away or to the guard house. I took 60 men to the depot last night about 9 o'clock and put them on the cars for Baltimore. They are sending the convalescents away to make room for the wounded of yesterday's battle at Bull Run. They had a very hard battle there. This morning's paper stated that our men took the Rebel Gen. Jackson and sixteen thousand prisoners, and that we lost some eight thousand men. We could hear the cannon plain at the rate of say 90 shots to the minute. I was up on the fourth story of the hospital with a telescope and I could see our Cavalry on the other side of the river moving very fast. About noon, our Company was called out. They packed their knapsacks, when the order was countermanded. Again at 10 o'clock at night they got orders to march, and some of the Regt. was down on the Avenue when they were stopped. I did not know it till morning. As we are guarding, we will not go. There is two thousand gone out last [night] and two thousand this morning to take care of the wounded. Our Captain and some of the men are gone. I would like to go, but can't get away.  I saw J.S. Portser. He looks very well and says that Banks looks well. Sam Stewart is sick and in Carver Barracks Hospital. I have not seen him yet, but will try and see him soon. I have got three letters from home since I came out, one at Harrisburg, and one with Rev. Johnson, and one here by mail. I have wrote 4 letters home. Please state in your next letter if you got our clothes. They were sent to W.J. Steritt. I had a coat and pair of pants, in mainly carpet sash. The boots, hat and rest I kept and am glad that I did, as we have to keep our boots blacked and these shoes are hard to keep in order.  Well Tillie, I must bring this line to a close by asking you to write soon and let me know the news of the town.  I wrote a letter to Banks on the 28th. They tell me that the mail is stopped going to the Army. I close by signing myself your most affectionate brother,  Clarence Hart Address, C.H., Co. D., 135 Regt. Pa. Vol. in care of Capt. J. G. Wilson, Washington, D.C.  C. Hart
