ITEM: A very unusual 1944 politically significant postcard painting that critiques the Allied Occupation of Naples in the late era of World War II. By the time Allied forces compelled the German Army to retreat from Naples (via a harrowing series of arial bombings), Naples was already one of the poorest communities in Italy, and under the Allied Occupation it became notorious for its black market, corruption, and prostitution as ordinary citizens struggled to get by day-to-day. Here that suffering is shown by the image of a uniformed American sMP flilrting with an Italian woman, as her black cat tries to scare him off, knowing him to have less than noble intentions. A fascinating and historical piece.
