Fresh from a Southern estate comes this wonderful 19th century Shiwan polychrome glazed figurine, possibly of Kwan-Yin, elegantly dressed and holding a lotus blossom in bud. Shiwan figures functioned as the Chinese equivalent of English Staffordshire figurines. The human figures sometimes contrast flesh areas left in unglazed biscuit with glazed clothes and hair. Gestures and facial expre...ssions are often dramatic. Made in China and dates to circa 1850. I removed the figurine from the lamp, and there are no markings on the bottom of the piece; just a hole to accommodate the lamp base.
This lovely figurine measures approximately 8.5 inches high by 3.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches wide, and is in very good condition for its age, with no visible cracks, fine crazing throughout, and a few areas of surface loss throughout which are evident in the photographs. The ones I would point out are a tiny glaze chip in the nose area, and scattered chips in the glaze along the left edge of the figure and in the base. There is also one break to the stem of the lotus, which originally extended further below the figure's proper right hand. But I have never noticed that break before examining the figure carefully, and it in no way detracts from the beauty of the object.
Sometime in the early 20th century the figurine was adapted to fit on a brass lamp base which stands approximately 19 inches high with finial. The lamp features a marvelous gold lined silk shade in the shape of a parasol, which is in excellent condition with virtually no stains, tears or holes. It is beautifully constructed onto an iron frame, and hand-stitched throughout. This shade measures approximately 8 inches high by 8.25 inches deep by 12 inches wide, and really makes the lamp!
The lamp has been rewired and has a new socket and cord. All in all this is a great piece which I have owned for years, but it's time to downsize and hand off to a new owner.
