Putney began service in the 26th Infantry as a clerk before eventually being transferred to the Army Air Corps and conductor of the the 405th Army Air Forces Band at Freeman Airfield in Indiana. Has well wishes from friends he knew in the 26th at Camp Devens, NY and also from Camp Joseph T. Robinson when he left for the Air Corps.
