At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.
Among these items are a variety o...f hallmarked sterling and gold pieces, including four mustard spoons, a number of single napkin rings, jewelry, and other items. You can view see which mustard spoons are still available by entering mustard in our ebay store search box near the upper right.
The photos are closeups; each spoon is 4" / 10 CM long. The pair together weighs 17.55 grams as seen on our jewelry scale.
PLEASE NOTE: These spoons are a pair with identical hallmarks. They do not have an Assay / Town mark. The seller's tag included an attribution that the were Georgian. I read online that in the absence of an Assay Mark, the Assay Office is presumed to be London. The spoons appear to me to bear the London Cycle XVII C date letter for 1798. The only slight anomaly I found is that the shape of the bottom edge of the cartouche for the date letter and the one the sterling purity mark in the published table have a slight dimple at the center where the ones on the spoons are more completely rounded. The marks are quite worn, which would suggest consistency with being over 200 years old. The worn outline of the Duty Mark conforms perfectly to the published one for that year. The duty mark would limit the date to 1890, and there is no prior style of the letter C that conforms to the font style except the one for 1798. One of the photos shows both the hallmarks on the spoon and the 1798 London Hallmark reference found online so you can make your own assessment. I am pretty confident that this attribution for the spoons is the correct one, and we will guarantee your satisfaction with your purchase.
The English hallmarks on the spoons are:
Maker's Mark - four letters, very worn, in a rectangular cartouche. Could possibly be the mark of Peter & Ann Bateman, late 18th Century (which would be consistent with a 1798 date attribution).
Silver Purity Mark - the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver purity
Assay / Town Mark - Not present; assumed to be London as noted above.
Date Letter - the Cycle XVII "C" date letter for 1798.
Duty Mark - The outline of the worn Duty Mark conforms to that of the example from the online table for 1798.
In addition to the hallmarks on the back, the front of the spoon is engraved with an image of a bird that looks to me like it could possibly be a dove holding a olive branch, a sign of peace.
Condition
The spoons are generally in good condition but there are a couple of issues to note:
the hallmarks have very heavy wear obscuring the interior details, as seen.
the spoons appear to have seen quite a bit of use over a period of years and there a some very tiny scratches and marks. One of the spoons has a little more wear / scratching on the handle. This is evident on the extreme closeup photo, but it is not very apparent when viewing the spoon in person except on close inspection.
