An Antique Edwardian Fan dated to between 1910 - Inspired by Queen Mary's Favourite Fan
Description
This fan is inspired by H.M. Queen Mary's favourite fan which is part of the Royal Collection where it is called "Fan depicting Bacchus and Ariadne". In 1910, the Queen gave permission for the fan leaf of 'Bacchus and Ariadne' (then thought to represent Rinaldo in the Garden of Armida) to be reproduced in colour on satin-fi...nished cotton as a supplement to the Christmas issue of The Gentlewoman (see the last 3 photos). It was also depicted on the opening colour plate of the famous book "History of the Fan" by G. Woolliscroft Rhead, also published in 1910. All was done to coincide with the beginning of H.M. King George V and H.M. Queen Mary's tenure following the death of Edward VII. Fortunately, I was able to acquire an unmounted fan leaf and also, by pure chance, a copy of the original magazine (the unmounted leaf and magazine are not for sale, but I would be happy to provide a photocopy of the relevant 2 pages of the magazine). Many of the fan leaves were mounted in 1910, some were given as New Year's Eve presents, for example at the Savoy Hotel.
This fan is one such example given by the Savoy Hotel to an attendee of the New Year's Eve party! It comes in its original box, but someone (why, oh, why?) removed the inside panel of the lid which stated that the fan was presented at the savoy (I have another exact same example in the exact same box in my collection with the inside panel present). The fan is made of gold painted, carved and pierced bone sticks and the single printed satin leaf. The sticks show small flowers and scrolls.
The fan measures approx. 7.75" long and 13.5" wide when fully open. The measurements in centimeters are 19.5 cm long and 34.5 cm wide when fully open. This fan is in very good condition, thanks to the box, with minimal wear along the top edge of the leaf (see photos).
The box shows wear, but it still protects the fan well (see photos).
