A truly remarkable and one of a kind antique. From our research we determined that this is an authentic 28" split drum made in Papua New Guinea most likely from the Maramba people in the Sepik Provence. It looks to have been at auction at one time as someone had written a number on the outside of the drum. The drum and grass fiber tassles still show well the original pigmented dye using red ochre which was usually obtainted from the clay on the Ramu River. The grasses do shed easily an...d are very delicate. This instrument, by its smaller size was most likely used as a signal to nearby tribes to spread news or to call someone. Some were made to be a sacred instrument for certain important males such as one entering manhood or as a gift to a brother-in-law for a dowry paid in full for his sister. The condition is very good considering its age. On one side the connection of the grass tassle came loose but can easily be reattached. See closeup photo of number marking from auction.
