For Your Consideration A Fine and Unusual Antique Chinese Canton Carved Export Fan 清朝 咸丰帝 Qing Era ca. 1835 - Boxed
Description The rare fan combines the Cantonese and Macao Schools of painting. I have never seen a fan like this before, and I have seen thousands at this stage.
The fan is made of carved sticks and a double paper leaf. The sticks are carved on BOTH sides with the usual dreamgarden motives... and scrolls along the top. The front leaf shows 3 separate court scenes in the usual 1000 faces style, but on a purple background. The scenes show the seated emperor Daoguang surrounded by various courtiers and the third scene appears to show his son. Unusually, the leaf is also painted with 2 round shapes that contain vines, grapes and peonies in blue and black shades. The back leaf shows a central scene of a large butterfly and peonies.reserves show peonies in green and white on the most unusual checked blue, red, purple and brown background.
The fan still has its original triple silk tassel attached.
The fan measures ca. 11" long and 20.5" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are 27.5 cm long and 51.5 cm wide.
The fan is in very good condition, with minor flaws as follows: There are 3 small repairs along the bottom edge of the leaf and some wear along the bottom edge on both side (see last photos). There is also a repaired tear (barely visible) in the leaf (see the photo with the red circle). The sticks are in great condition and the colours are bright and strong!
This fan comes in a fitted lacquer box with a painted silk panel on the inside of the lid. The box is also in very good condition, except for some wear on the blue silk of the cardboard fitting (see photos).
Postage Packaging and postage to the UK via REGISTERED AND TRACKED AIRMAIL USING THE POST OFFICE will cost £13.30, within Europe via Airmail £13.70 (15.50 Euro), overseas via Airmail £14.60 (ca. US$18.50).
