Thoughts of "Downton Abbey, " and "Foyle's War" on TV; “Dunkirk” the recent movie; The Blitz, The Battle for Britain, Winston Churchill and his cigar and tommy gun may all be brought back to us with mementos like this “Bundles for Britain Plate.’ From the early stages of World War II (now often only ancient history to many Americans) until the end of the Marshall Plan the American based “British War R...elief Society” was extremely helpful to our British “cousins” across the Atlantic. Particularly helpful was the “Bundles for Britain” organization that provided clothing, medical supplies, including ambulances, and other essential items. Money for this movement was raised in various way including the sale of items bearing the crest of the British Monarchy (a Lion Rampant and the motto in French “Dieu et Mon Droit” (translation: “God and My Right”). One may ask why the British Crown would have a French language phrase. Research indicates that that usage goes back to the reign of Richard I and makes the claim that the King of England has ‘the right’ to the Crown of France. {There were a few wars fought over this claim, by the way.} This Bundles for Britain plate has a very large and colorful display of that crest. Particularly interesting is the official endorsement of the U. S. State Department that provided a unique registration number as shown on the back of the plate.
This 9” diameter plate was produced by Steubenville Pottery (no longer in existence) for the Bundles for Britain cause. It is very bright and has a lovely decorative edge pattern. If you have an interest in World War II, and especially the English side, and the extremely helpful American assistance to the English during those difficult days this would be a very nice item to have at a most reasonable price.
