Here is an extremely rare variety of 1880 $20 Legal Tender. It is the Fr 147m Mule with Elliott-White signature on the front but Burke back plate. This is the only series 1880 in US currency to have a mule variety, and very few were printed. The PMG population report shows 37 known in all grades. I have only ever seen 3 of them in my lifetime of collecting. There is currently one other listed on ebay at $3, 400 in VF. The only other one I have seen sold for $1, 000. This note also has ...a low 6 digit serial, the third lowest I have seen for an Elliott-White signature.
The note grades a nice VF in my opinion. The paper still has plenty of crispness. The color is bold both on the seal/serial numbers and on the main printing. So this note has not been washed. It does have some toning or soiling but still has a pleasing appearance overall. Also has a couple pinholes typical of large notes. The folds are not harsh and I would place it in the VF 20-25 range. Please check scans and judge for yourself. I have included scans of a certified VF-25 large note for comparison. That note is not included in the auction but for comparing grading only.
If you collect varieties or just want an exceptionally rare note, don't pass up this chance. These almost never come up for sale and once this one goes, the only other choice is the $3, 400 note on here. I am pricing it way below value to give another collector the chance to fill that spot in their collection with this Mule variety that most people will never have. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
