It was struck at Rome in 83 BC by the Praetor Q. Antonius Balbus.

He struck this coin by special decree of the "Marian" dominated Senate, to pay the troops that were about to lose the "Battle of the Colline Gate" against the victor of the ongoing Civil War, Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

Marius and Sulla had a history of antipathy dating back to when Sulla, as a Legate under Marius in Numidia, laid a trap that captured Jugurtha, the then enemy king, ending the war. Marius went on to be Consul a total of 7 times. When Sulla became Consul, a war broke out in Asia with King Mithridates. Sulla, as Consul, naturally got the command and left to join his army. Marius, meanwhile had the Senate lift the command off Sulla and give it to him instead.

In response, for the first time ever, (but certainly not the last) a Roman General, Sulla, "Marched on Rome" with his army and took it, the Marians dying or fleeing. Sulla eventually left to fight Mithridates. While he was gone the Marius faction again took over Rome. Q. Antonius Balbus, who struck this coin, was a "Marian" Praetor in 83. When Sulla returned to Italy he again "Marched on Rome", won at the Colline Gate, became Dictator and sent L. Philippus to Sardinia to execute Balbus.

Weight: 3.84 Gram, 18 Millimeter, Silver.
"Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 1, by David R. Sear. #279.
Obverse: S C • For "Senatus Consulto" or by decree of the Senate behind laureate head of Jupiter, right.

All of the above, the Civil War, the marches on Rome, the Dictatorship and the resulting bloodbath, was seen and lived through by a teenaged nephew of Gaius Marius. And who, because of his family relationship with the looser, was in some danger and had to go into temporary hiding. His name was Gaius Julius Caesar.

Reverse: Q • ANTO • BALB • (ANT) and (AL) in ligature or monogram. • PR for Praetor below. • The winged Goddess Victory, driving a fast quadriga or four-horse chariot right, while holding a palm branch and presenting the laurels of victory. • Mint control letter L below the horses.

Advertising a victory that never happened. The soldiers that had these in their pockets lost the battle, the city and the war.

Denarius "Serratus" > Placing notches around the edges of the flans before striking was first done at Narbo in Gaul in 118 BC and then not again until 106-105 BC at Rome. Then this one in 83 BC at Rome. After this one, they would continue to be produced concurrently with coins with the normal round flans until the 60's BC. It is unknown why they did it, but the "Denarius Serratus" versions remain scarcer.

The Coin: Beauty and history in abundance here. The coin saw some use before it found somewhere to wait out the centuries. The obverse was struck slightly off-center but the reverse has one of the nicer, most complete renditions of Victory driving a quadriga and bringing her laurels. Genuine, NOT a copy or reproduction, Real History in your hands. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
