U.S. "Hobo Nickel" Double Carved Buffalo 5 Cents Coin 1913 -"Matchmaker"
This is a SCARCE DOUBLE CARVED Example of a Classic (not modern) Hand Carved "HOBO NICKEL" on a United States Buffalo Nickel. This 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel shows a QUALITY DETAILED CARVING of a Bearded Helmeted Man on the obverse. The reverse shows an ADDITIONAL CARVING of a Bearded Helmeted Man with a Sack on his Back.
This Carving appears to be the work of the Artist known as the “MA...TCHMAKER” although I cannot be certain.
Returning WWI Veterans and victims of the Great Depression often struggled and became homeless. Many of them rode the rails or slept in the parks, woods or streets. Homeless people, often called Hobos, attempted to raise money to survive by carving a Buffalo Nickel and selling it for 20 to 50 Cents.
Many of them were talented artists and produced high quality carvings which are much sought after as collectibles.
These are now VERY COLLECTIBLE and have become QUITE SCARCE.
The Nickel grades in Very Fine Condition.
Shipping and handling cost will be $3.25. International Shipping will be $11.75. Please read our shipping policy below.
