This listing is for a NuestraSeñora de Atocha Potosi mint 8 Reale shipwreck silver coin. This coin is a grade 2 originalprinted card and plastic holder. Pleasenote this coin does not include an original COA Certificate. I purchased this coin in 2005 from theoriginal owner. He advised me that the COA Certificate had been lost. The coinis in age appropriate condition.
Theterm “Atocha Coins” ...refers to silver and gold Spanish coins recovered from theNuestra Señora de Atocha shipwreck in 1985 by Mel Fisher and his salvageorganization. Nuestra Señora de Atocha isbelieved to have sunk on or around September 6, 1622. The heavily laden treasure galleon of KingPhilip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet struck a reef and sank during a hurricane.
The NuestraSenora de Atocha carried over 200, 000 hand stamped silver coins from mintsin Potosi, Lima. The Atocha 8Reales Spanish Cob coins have a Potosi "P" and Assayer "T"stamp on it.
Thiscoin was minted at a Potosi Mint by famed Assayer Tapia (Jaun Ximenez Tapia) whooversaw the striking of these coins between 1618 and 1622. Known to be Dyslexic, he created reversed, double struck and broken dies while supervising the production ofover 200, 000 hand stamped 8 Reales Spanish cob silver coins. The coins with thereversal stamp on the back make them more valuable.
