Indeed, they made no provision of an...y kind to address this need. Many of the dead, on both sides, were buried as "Unknown".
This is quite likely an item sold to a Union Soldier by a Sutler or merchant. They traveled with and sold items like tobacco, coffee, food, soap, and the like to the troops. This looks like an item, produced fairly early during the war, that a sutler would carry. It was certainly carried, and worn, by a Civil War Veteran, named Madison.

Andy Madison? or A. N. Madison and a clumsy sutler? It would be a challenge to pin it down. One wonders if he was related to the 4th President, if he survived the war, if he was captured or killed. Original period, personal items from the veterans who fought this horrific war are not common today.
The Medal: A used example, he at least had time to wear most of the gilt off. It has some stains and the rim looks like it went through the war. It is fully original and has not been cleaned, a very nice piece overall. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
