1980 Silver Zambian International Year of the Child 10 Kwacha Coin
Offered for yourconsideration is a silver 10 Kwacha coin issued by Zambia in 1980. This coinwas struck as part of a worldwide series celebrating the International Year ofthe Child (why this coin was struck a year after the declaration of the Year ofthe Child is unknown to the seller). The obverse features a portrait of KennethDavid Buchizya Kaunda, the first president of Zambia, serving from 1964-1991. Theissuing aut...hority, “ZAMBIA”, appearsabove, while the date, “1980”, canbe seen below. The reverse depicts three children frolicking on playground equipment, with an inscription below referencing the reason for the issue, “INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE CHILD”, andabove with the denomination, “KWACHA 10”.The celebration’s logos flank the central vignette. The coin was struck inproof, with a total mintage listed as 12, 000 coins. Research indicates that itwas struck in .925 silver (sterling silver), measures approximately 40mm indiameter, and contains .8095 oz. ASW (actual silver weight).
