Embossed company seal lower left.Certificate No. 74 was issued to N. B. Newlon for three shares ofcapital stock ($100 per share). Original ink signatures of companypresident Louis Bennett and secretary J. S. (John Stillwell)Mitchell. Certificate is about 8.5” x 9.5”. Black print withgreen overprint.

TheWeston Electric Light, Power & Water Company was organized andpromoted by John Stillwell Mitchell and incorporated on November 9, 1899, with J. S. Mitchell, W. G. Bennett, Messrs. Ralston, Lewis andKitson as incorporators. Weston, West Virginia is located in LewisCounty on the West Fork River in the north central part of the state.John Stillwell Mitchell, secretary and superintendent of the WestonElectric Light, Power & Water Company, was the son of Benjaminand Eleanor (Stillwell) Mitchell. His father was a shipbuilder byoccupation and lived in Hancock, Washington County, Maryland, whereJohn S. was born March 2, 1853. He received his education in thepublic schools, after which he joined his father in business, remaining there until 1881, when he went to Weston, West Virginia, later joining W.G. and Louis Bennett to form the Weston Electriccompany.
