CompanyHistory:PardonM. Bowen was the president of the Auburn and Rock Creek Gold MiningCompany in the 1880s. The company was owned by Goldberg, Bowen andCompany of San Francisco and Oakland, which became known as a gourmetgrocery chain (established in 1850 and incorporated in 1889).The parent company was founded by J. Goldberg and L. Lebenbaum whowere fruit merchants in the Utah Territory in the 1870s. Auburn andRock Creek Gold Mining Company mines were located in Placer County, California near the town of Auburn, and included the R Rock CreekMine and the Auburn Mine. The mines were within quartz lode goldveins. A mill was built to process gold in quartz ore after thisunderwriting took place. The company reported a chute of gold-richrich ore, and in 1882 the mines were sold to J. W. Foulkes &Company. Lode gold mining operations along the North Fork of theAmerican River were centered about two miles west of the old townarea of Auburn, California, which was discovered in 1851. This goldmining district is in southwestern Placer County, in the vicinity ofthe old town of Ophir and included many individual mines developedalong a west-northwest-trending belt of quartz veins. Gold-bearingsurface gravels were discovered at Ophir and Auburn in 1848 and forseveral years yielded substantial amounts of gold. The quartz veinswere then developed, and the Ophir and Duncan Hill Mining Districtswere organized. Appreciable amounts of high-grade gold placer andlode ore were recovered during the 1860's, 1870's, and 1880's. Themines were active again from the early 1900's through the 1930's withsubstantial production. The gold-bearing quartz veins primarily occurin the granitic rocks. The Ophir and Auburn Mining Districts aresituated at the western edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Thisdistrict contains numerous small underground mines, which weredeveloped along the extensive system of quartz veins.
