Vignette with a small mining campin the mountains.TheRaspberry Mountain Mining Company mines were located near BuenaVista, Colorado (Chaffee County). Buena Vista is located in centralColorado roughly midway between Salida and the famous mining town ofLeadville in the Upper Arkansas River Valley. The gold and silvermines were near the former mining town of St. Elmo in the ChalkCreek Mining District (Sawatch Mountain Range). The mines andprospects of the Chalk Creek Mining District are distributed chieflyin three areas: Browns Creek area in the east; Baldwin Gulch area, 31/2 miles southeast of St. Elmo; and the largest and most important, a belt 1 1/2 mile to 2 miles wide and about 10 miles long thatextends from the Continental Divide northeast across ChrysoliteMountain. Chrysolite Mountain rises on the south side of the ChalkCreek Valley in the Sawatch Mountains of central Colorado. The ChalkCreek Mining District lies at the upper end of the Chalk Creekdrainage above Mount Princeton Hot Springs. Gold was discovered in1875 just west of St. Elmo and it wasn’t long after this discoverythat the Mary Murphy Mine became the biggest gold producer in thearea. By 1881, the town and the gold had attracted 2, 000 residents.As more miners discovered gold, the town population continued togrow. InDecember of 1880, the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad finallyreached St. Elmo from Buena Vista. Within three years, there wereapproximately 50 producing mines in the area. In the early 1880s, St.Elmo had three hotels, five restaurants, a drugstore, and aschoolhouse. Rich with ore, the town was a base for the workers atthe Mary Murphy Mine, an operation that produced more than $60million in gold and employed hundreds of workers. TheMary Murphy Mine was in full-time operation from 1870 to 1925 duringwhich time it produced more than 220, 000 ounces of gold—worth $4.4million at that time, about $180 million in 2008—as well as silver, lead, and zinc.
