Boston& New-York Chickasaw Land Company. Stock issued on August 18, 1846 in Boston, Massachusetts. Certificate No. 147 was issued toEdward Crehone for 20 shares of capital stock ($500 per share).Company capital was $500, 000. Original ink signatures of companypresident Marsh (?) Healey and secretary B. D. Whitney. Certificatewas transferred on the reverse side from Edward Crehone to companypresident Marsh Healey in 1850 (both men’s signatures). Certificateis about 4” x 8”. Sm...all vignette left center of an AmericanIndian.

CompanyHistory:TheBoston & New York Chickasaw Land Company was involved with theauctions of cheap Indian lands as a result of cessions of land by theChoctaw and Chickasaw Indians. The company represented investors andspeculators from New York, Boston, and other New Englanders. Althougha Boston company, the land was in Mississippi. The Chickasaw Indiantribe lived in northern Mississippi, and were considered one of the'five civilized tribes' of Oklahoma. They were enemies of the Frenchbut friends of the British, and were fierce fighters.
TheChickasaw Indians originated in its homeland of the AmericanSoutheast, with territory in what are defined as modern-dayMississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. The Chickasaw remainedin their Homeland of western Kentucky, western Tennessee, northernMississippi and northwest Alabama until the 1830s. After decades ofincreasing pressure by federal and state governments to cede theirland, as European Americans were eager to move into their territoryand had already begun to do so as squatters or under fraudulent landsales, the Chickasaw finally agreed to cede their remainingMississippi Homeland to the US under the Treaty of Pontotoc Creek andrelocate west of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory. Thedivision of the Choctaw lands was ratified by the Choctaw–ChickasawTreaty of 1854. The Chickasaw constitution, establishing the nationas separate from the Choctaw, was signed August 30, 1856, in theirnew capital of Tishomingo (now Tishomingo, Oklahoma). The firstChickasaw governor was Cyrus Harris. Following the Civil War, theUnited States forced the Chickasaw Nation into a new peace treaty dueto their support for the Confederacy. Under the new treaty, theChickasaw (and Choctaw) ceded the "Leased District" to theUnited States.
