Thumbnail History...On December 2, 1925, the Interessen-Gemeinschaft Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft (Community of Interests of the Dyestuffs Industries, a Stock Corporation, ) came into existence. It was a merger of Germany’s six leading dye and chemical companies:BASF with 27.4% ownership Bayer with 27.4% ownership Hoechst (including Cassella and Chemische Fabrik Kalle) with 27.4% ownership Agfa with 9% ownership Chemische Fabrik Griesheim-Elektron with 6.9% ownership Chemische Fabrik vorm. Weiler Ter Meer with 1.9% ownership After WWII the company was dissolved by the Allies following the conviction of its top corporate officers of war crimes in 1948 in the case of The United States of America vs. Carl Krauch, et al.,  or as it's more commonly known,  the I.G. Farben Trial. As the primary chemical contractor to the Nazi state, the court found that I.G. Farben made regular and profitable use of slave labor in its operations; participated in the despoliation of conquered territories; and aided in a war of aggression. “All in all, I. G. produced between 50 and 55 per cent of Germany’s total production of chemicals and allied products… It was responsible for approximately 40 per cent of Germany’s total turnover in these fields. In 1943 it accounted for 100% of German synthetic rubber production; 100% of methanol production--indispensable in the manufacture of plastics, synthetic resins and rubber; 100%, lubricating oils; 100%, serums; 92% of the plasticizers; 90% of the organic intermediates; 90% of the plastics; 88% of the magnesium; 64% of the explosives; and 75% of the nitrogen”Report of the Investigation of I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G.
Prepared by Division of Investigation of Cartels and External Assets,
Office of Military Government, U. S. (Germany) November, 1945 The bloodiest stain on I.G. Farben's hands was Auschwitz. In early 1941 I.G. selected a piece of ground for their new "Buna Werke" complex for the production of synthetic rubber ("buna") and fuels. The site was situated along the Vistula River near the hamlet of Monowice (Ger: Monowitz), 4 miles east of the main Auschwitz concentration camp in occupied Polish Silesia. The site had been chosen for its proximity to rail lines; local access to basic raw materials; its (then) safe distance from Allied bombers, and the abundant cheap labor available from Auschwitz. The SS rented slaves to I.G. at rates from RM1.5 per day for a youth, to RM4 a day for a skilled worker. At its peak, in mid-1944, the Buna Werke had a workforce of 80, 000. Construction began in April 1941 with forced labor marched in daily from the Auschwitz I main camp. Within a few months, it was decided that it would increase productivity by having the prisoners work longer hours instead of marching to and fro, so a camp with an initial capacity for 12, 000 inmates was built next to the I.G. plants. The new facilities there constructed would be known as Monowitz-Buna, or after 1943,  Auschwitz III - the Third Reich's first (and largest, ) privately funded concentration camp. I.G.'s tentacles extended even further into the Hell that was Auschwitz with their 42.5% ownership (in conjunction with Degussa AG, ) of the Degesh company. That firm owned the patent on Zyklon B, a popular pre-war pesticide, which was used by the Nazis to gas over a million people at Auschwitz-Birkenau (also known as Auschwitz II, ) just a few miles to the southwest of the Buna Werke. It was calculated that the average I.G. slave worker had a life expectancy of about 3 months, after which time broken, starved, and used-up, they were dispatched to Birkenau. In a gruesomely ironic twist, the massive works which had directly cost thirty-thousand lives and RM700 million, never produced a kilo of buna. Slated to begin production in 1943, start-up was repeatedly delayed due to disruptions brought on by the ever increasing tempo of the Allied air campaign. Troops from the 1st Ukrainian Front of the Red Army liberated Auschwitz on 27 January 1945.Of the 24 directors, managers, and staff arraigned at the I.G. Farben Trial, 13 of the men were convicted on various charges and sentenced to between 1 and 9 years in prison; 10 were acquitted, and 1 case was dismissed due to reasons of the defendant's poor health. Of those convicted, very few would serve their full sentences, and most would return to high positions in private industry after a brief period of rehabilitation. The company itself was split into its original constituent members, with the residue of the estate going into liquidation in 1953 in a wind-down process that was only completed in 2012.Please see my other offers for stocks from Degussa AG and Dessauer Werke.
