CompanyHistory:PowellRiver Company Limited – At the turn of the century the CanadianIndustrial Company owned pulp leases in Powell River, BritishColumbia, and the Pacific Coast Power Company owned the water ofPowell Lake. These two companies merged in 1909, and a Minnesota firmBrooks and Scanlon purchased the rights to the pulp leases and thewater of Powell Lake. They had working capital of $1, 000, 000 and in1909 the Powell River Paper Company was incorporated. It soon becameapparent the initial investment of two paper machines would not besufficient and more funds would be needed immediately to increase thecapacity to four paper machines. Bonds were issued and the foundersmade personal guarantees for the required million and a half dollars.Skilled employees were brought in from the Crown Willamette Companyin Oregon. In 1911 the company was renamed and incorporated as thePowell River Company. Norman Lang was acquired from Crown Willametteas manager under the condition Crown Willamette be allowed topurchase the majority shares of the Powell River Company. The firstroll of saleable newsprint was produced in April 1912. That year, thecompany started construction of the town that grew up around theplant site. Known as the Townsite, the community consisted of 401individual homes for the employees. The Powell River Company hiredDr. Andrew Henderson as its physician and he built the firsthospital, St. Lukes, in 1913.;The company built Powell Rivers firstschool, Henderson School, on Ash Street in 1913. The company alsobuilt Brooks School in 1926. Brooks was built as an elementary schooland later became the community’s only secondary school. The PowellRiver Company merged with MacMillian Bloedel in December 1959 and becameknown as MacMillan Bloedel & Powell River Ltd. Harold Foley, former president of the Powell River Company and other formerdirectors of the Powell River Company, resigned as directors from themerged company in 1961. In 1966 Powell River was dropped from thename and the company became MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. In 1998 MacMillianBloedel sold the plant and the site to Pacifica Papers. MacMillanBloedel retained their timber rights, which included StillwaterDivision, until they sold them to Weyerhaeuser in 1999. Weyerhaeusersold these rights to Cascadia shortly after purchasing them. PacificaPapers divested themselves of the Powell River and Lois Lake dams andPowell River Energy was formed.
