NourseConsolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Colorado. Stock issued onMay 15, 1881 in Leadville, Colorado. Incorporated in 1881 in theState of Colorado. Gold embossed company seal (lower left) that has“Incorporated Leadville, Colorado 1881” in the center. Certificate No. 61 was issued to J. H. Gillispie for 110shares of capital stock ($10 per share). Company capital was$1, 000, 000. Original ink signatures of company president (ink hasfaded and is illegible) and secretary E. A.... McFain. The reverse sideof the certificate has printed “The property owned by this Companyis located at Alpine, Colorado, and consists of “Silver Plume”, “White Iron”, “Kossuth”, “Nevada”, “Chrystal Rock”, and “Chicago Boy” Lodes.” Certificate is about 6.5” x 9.5”.Black print on tan-colored paper. Vignette with miners with ore cartsnext to mine entrance.

When the mines playedout, the MaryMurphy Mineabout four miles from St.Elmowas the last to close in 1910, and both Alpine and St. Elmo becameghost towns. The SanIsabel National Forestcompletely surrounds Alpine and St. Elmo. The first cabin was builtin Alpine, Colorado in 1877, and by 1880 there was a population offive hundred. The town flourished as a supply point for other townsfurther along Chalk Creek. The city had two hotels, a dance hall, twenty-three saloons, a newspaper and all the other usual businessesfor a growing mining town. About the time Alpine was beginning to bequite a city, the railroad extended itself to St. Elmo, and St. Elmobecame everything Alpine was and hoped to be. The newspaper, thebanks and most businesses packed up and moved to St. Elmo.
