It was struck between 262 and 265 AD at Cologne in modern Germany for, and b...ears the portrait of, "Postumus the Usurper", the first of the "Gallic" Emperors to reign during the period known as the "Military Anarchy and Economic Collapse."

The "Darkest Days" for the Roman Empire, Britain, Gaul and parts of Spain broke from the central Empire in 260 and formed the separate "Gallo-Roman Empire" under Postumus. He succeeded in holding off the efforts of the central government to reunite the empire and the "Gallic Empire" continued to exist for a period of 14 years. Postumus here lasted until 269 when he was assassinated.

Weight: 2.23 Gram, 21 Millimeter, Billon or low purity silver.
"Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 3, by David R. Sear. #10962.

Obverse: IMP • C • POSTVMVS • P • F • AVG • Imperator or commander, Caesar Postumus, Pius or dutiful, Felix or fortunate Augustus or Emperor. • Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. The radiate crown identifies the denomination as an "Antoninianus" or double denarius.

Reverse: MONETA • AVG • Money and fairness esteemed. • Juno Moneta, an epithet of Juno, was the protectress of funds and fairness. Here she stands left holding scales and cornucopia.

This entire period has long been considered the low point in both Roman history and in minting standards. However, surprisingly, Postumus maintained higher standards than the contemporary central Emperor, Gallienus. The billon coins like this of Postumus had up to a 20% silver content. The coins of the central Empire had less than 5% and Postumus was advertising and pointing it out with the reverse of this coin.

The Coin: A presentable example for one of these carelessly produced coins. The legends are weak in places but discernible enough to be certain of the attribution. The portrait is quite nice but the reverse has a normal weak sloppy strike. Genuine, NOT a copy or reproduction, Real History in your hands. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
