It was struck at the Siscia mint in w...hat is today Croatia in 273 AD for the "Restorer of the World", the Emperor Aurelian.

Aurelian, who few know of today, was one of the greatest military leaders the Roman Empire ever had. After beating off the invading Goths, he restored the twice shrunken Empire from its "Darkest Days" to its full former extent.

He put an end to the "Palmyrene Empire" which included Egypt, in the East, that had broken off since the Roman Emperor Valerian had been captured by the Sassanids, and the "Gallo-Roman Empire" consisting of Britain, France and Spain in the West. The famed "Queen Zenobia of Palmyra" and the "Gallo-Roman Emperor Tetricus" both appeared as captives in the Triumph Aurelian celebrated in Rome. After the Triumph he spared the lives of both, setting Zenobia up in an Italian Villa and giving Tetricus a post in the government of Italy.

Weight: 3.67 Gram, 23 Millimeter, Low purity Silver or Billon.
Similar to "Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 3, by David R. Sear. #11573.

Obverse: IMP • C • AVRELIANVS • AVG • Imperator, Caesar Aurelian, Emperor. • Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Aurelian right. The radiate crown identified the denomination as an "Antoninianus" or double Denarius. There also exist billon Denarius coins of Aurelian but with a Laureate portrait.

Reverse: ORIENS • AVG • The rising sun of the Emperor. • The Sun God, Sol, advancing left between two seated captives, raising right hand and holding horsewhip (for his chariot). • Star in field before him. • S in exergue, is the second Siscia mint workshop or officina letter.

Aurelian really did restore the "Roman World". He was murdered by his Praetorian Guard in 275.

The Coin: A very presentable example, it saw enough use to show some light wear. Then it spent centuries in the ground, but the ground was very kind to it, leaving a dark patina but not corroding it away or encrusting it with large deposits. Genuine, NOT a copy or reproduction, Real History in your hands. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
