Original Description:
Civil War Model 1840 Cavalry Saber with Original Scabbard by Friedrick Potter . Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. This is not a real commonly found enlisted man's Cavalry Saber  - they are early war years 1861-62 sabers that I think initially were sold to the Northern States but I believe that this one found it's way somehow into the hands of a Confederate Soldier or a Cavalry Trooper due to the fact that it was field repaired at one time and the blade was fully ...sharpened - another Southern trait .  The Maker's mark is clearly indicated on the Obverse with the Hare's Head and an F and a P under it with the Hare facing left but the P is very faint . This blade is 36-3/8"s L x 1-3/16"s W and is 3/8"s thick at the ricasso , and it has app. 11 nicks with only one being fairly deep . Another sign of a possible CSA used saber is the fact that the field repair was made and the grip was shortened because most of the Potter sabers had 20 turns of wire wrap and this one has been shortened to only 15 turns as observed from the obverse . The grip has app. 75% of it's original leather and some of the cord wrap under the leather is showing as well . The blade is rust and pitting free and is in great shape for an early war years saber . There are also several defensive strikes and striations and scratches on the hand guard and the rivets on the scabbard are missing but it is in good working order . The scabbard has rust and pitting as well as 5 or 6 dents and some evidence of black paint still showing . The typical Prussian P style drag is thick and large . All in all a very good example of a possible Confederate used and later Union captured Cavalry Saber due to evidence of gold GAR HALL paint . I sell and ship to the lower 48 states only and this is an as is sale with no returns - so be sure before you buy . Shipping will be $25.00 or actual cost whichever is greater . The props used in the photos are not for sale only the saber and it's scabbard . Thanks for looking and best regards.BC
