Half of a sheet had sold for $800 at auction. Than a small hoard was discovered, and they were put on the market all at once, giving the impression that they are now very common. While nowhere as rare as they use to be, they are still quite scarce, and in time they will be absorbed by the market, as many others have. Also..., due to the manufacturing methods that existed in the pre-1820s, good paper quality is much more difficult to find. Many of the sheets were manufactured with heavy wrinkles and paper folds. The preparation of printing plates was not that great either, resulting in many notes not inking properly. This is quite evident on many of the $5 denomination of this bank. All notes of this bank were of extreme rarity or unknown to survive, until this hoard was discovered. This bank eventually became The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Baltimore, which is still in existence today.
