1954 commercial airmail cover from the Banca D'Italia in Rome, Italy to the Real Bank of Canada in Montreal, Canada. The cover has two different postmarks clearly reading December 16, 1954 (Rome, Italy), and it is franked with machine-stamped commercial postage. It has three red wax seals applied in Italy, so it must have been an important piece of correspondence.However, what makes this cover truly remarkable is that is survived a plane crash on December 18, 1954 outs...ide New York City. After dropping some passengers off in Boston (the lucky few), the plane encountered bad weather near New York. On the fourth pass, the plane finally attempted landing and came up short of the runway, crashing into a pier in a marshy river/seaside area. Of the 32 passengers and crew on board, only 6 survived. According to news accounts, mail surfaced and was floating on the water. Obviously, this letter was one of the ones fished out after the crash. Consequently, the cover has a number of red hand-stamps stating that it was "Received Damaged Plane Crash at N.Y." It also has a December 24th hand-stamp, perhaps from when it was finally received in Canada. The letter is absent, but there is some evidence of it, as the ink from the typed letter bled into the remnants of the envelope.This cover is a living piece of tragic history from over 65 years ago. It is an extremely rare and highly collectible piece for the right buyer.
