Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is an outstanding find of a breathtaking, working, deeply hand carved, full featured large cuckoo clock with a rare natural wood finish! The clock was created about 45 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "West Germany." It is most impressive in looks ...and size and one of the most unusual I've seen in recent years. The clock measures about 15 1/2" high(from the tip of the bird on top to the bottom of the grape leaves and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7" deep, and about 11" across the top. The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Lindenwood which has been the preferred wood of carvers in the Black Forest since the 1870's. The case front looks like an intricate grape vine and is adorned with seven large, deeply carved grape leaves. There is yet another grape leaf found on the wooden pendulum. The carvings are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy, and the finish is all natural; absolutely beautifull! There is a carved wooden perched to the right ofthe dial and another large bird is perched to the left. Each is looking upward at a larger bird on top that looks as though he's ready to take flight. The dial has a blackbackdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancymatching hands to point out the time. There is a wooden dance platform complete with wooden scallops mounted just above the dial and four colorful dance couples are found on the rotating dance floor just behind it. Theclock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. The back easily removes toallow access to the weight driven mechanical movement inside the case that was produced by "Regula." A weight drivenmovement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to windthe clock, music, and cuckoo activities. Regula movements are always found in the finest clocks. The bellow tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dance platform and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice soundingchime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the doorbehind him. Once he is safely inside, the dance floor begins to turn and the dancers twirl about as a Swiss music box inside the case plays a heavenly rendition of "Die Muhle im Schwarzwald" (The Black Forest Mill), one of the most recognized tunes ever created. Once the song is over, the dancers stop dancing and wait for the next half hour. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before retreating to the safeconfines of the inner clock and then the magic starts again. The dancers begin to dance as the dance floor turns and this time the music box plays an equally nice rendition of "Holzhackersbub'n" (Woodchoppers March), another well known lively tune. Once the tune is over, the dancers wait again; absolutely fascinating! There is an intact label on the left side that features both song titles. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoosas it should and the music is beautiful too. Keep in mind that even though the clock looks fairly new, it is not so some adjustments or service may benecessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The clock does however, appear to have been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, we always recommend toour clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least onceevery three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one andkeep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with three setsof attached metal chains, a wooden grape leaf pendulum, and three rather heavypinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well andcan't find any damage or missing parts. I did notice an old, hard-to-see repair on the upper frame but it's not noticeable from the front. Overall, the clock shows only a bare minimum of wear and is absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is just stunning and a great nostalgic look back at the greatness ofBlack Forest workmanship. It iscertain to turn a few heads when displayed in your home, office, orwherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, beautifully carved, full-featured cuckoo clock with a real history behind it.
