A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of the pages of a book, such that the painting is not visible when the book is closed.
In order to view the painting, the leaves of the book must be fanned, exposing the edges of the pages and thereby the painting.
If you just look at the edge while the book is closed the painting is not visible.
This fore-edge painting depicts a portrait of Longfellow in the center surrounded on both sides with floral arrangements.

Bound in the highest quality leather binding!
Bound in thick turquoise moroccan leather binding.
This is a full leather binding.

With an elaborately gilded and tooled spine.
Trimmed edges and turn ins.
All edges are cased in gilding!

This book measures 6 3/4 inches tall.

COBDITION: Better than Good condition, near VERY GOOD Condition with some generalized abrasion and shelf wear. Fore edge is of Longfellow and is therefore of greater value. Fire edge is faded/rubbed, can be described as faint. The leather is supple and fresh, hinges are strongly attached, there is some light general wear/rubs, some rubs to the fore-edge; no writing or previous signs of ownership. Very well-preserved. Some light minor foxing. This is a beautiful book. General rubbing scuffing; rubs on upper hinge, not starting, hinges are fully attached; fore edge is simple and not particularly obvious as well as interrupted by pages that albeit not overextended are not perfectly smooth; appears to be original as issued as it conforms as-issued. This book measures 6 5.5/8ths; being just under 6.75 inches tall. The thick leather covers are beveled. Book can still make an excellent gift but it has a lot of generalized wear and rubs. In mint/Fine condition this book and fore edge would sell for well over $1000.00.
This would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library.
