Civil War Officers Sword Belt Buckle 2 Piece. (with) Prominence . Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. This piece comes with a great story, its not a run of the mill buckle that no one knows where it came from. This buckle was owned and worn by Officer Lieut. Sylvester B. Partridge U.S Signal Corps. Born and raised in New York Your buckle is a scarcer variant of the model 1850 officer’s sword belt plate that has solid brass wreath instead of the applied German silver w...reath found on enlisted plates. Few officers’ plates were made in quantity like this example which has a matching benchmark on both the keeper and the plate itself. There are numerous varieties of Civil War sword belt plates, and this is a fine example. The added history that is found on the card accompanying the buckle would probably add 25%, maybe more to its value. Sylvester Baron Partridge (1837-1912) enlisted on 12/9/1861 at Potsdam, NY as a 1st Sergeant in company "H" Co. NY 92nd Infantry. On 3/3/1863 he was commissioned into US Army Signal Corps where he would now need a sword and sword belt that officers were required to wear, so we can date buckle's use to mid-1863-1865. It must of been an important relic to his family as they kept it in an old jewelry case that they specially fitted for it. He resigned from service just after the war on 5/30/1865 and entered Newton Theological Seminary and was ordained in the Baptist Church and started his career as a minister in the Far East. His 1st assignment was 5 years as a missionary in Siam from 1868-1873, then he moved on to Swatlow, China which had just been opened to foreigners, where he was the first Baptist minister working in China and translated the New Testament into Chinese dialect of the area he was working. After 40 years of mission work in the Far East, he returned to the United States in 1908 living in Hamilton New York till his death September 12, 1912. This is a true Relic and Find, this a true one of a kind piece.Good luck to all Bidders!!!!
