This... was a command practice. A lot of these brooches have gold content I.e 9k. I acid tested for 10k and it faded over a period time. I believe the outside does have gold content. Probably 9k or rolled gold. The inside bazel is not gold. It measures approximately 2 inches long. Please goggle " civil war brooches" under images you will fined lots of information...
