ABOUT THIS COVER Thefeature stamp on this expertly designed, stamp-rich cover, hand drawn and individually hand painted by Carol Gordon . . . designed on Carol's signature 7¼ by 5¼ inch, handmade envelope ( please see Interesting Tidbit below ) isthe PO’s 1996 50 Year Anniversary of ...the Fulbright Scholarship stamp, Scott # 3065. ( I listed a Carol Gordon/Fulbright Scholarship FDC last month, but with a different combo selection, but even that original one I listed did not have any foreign combos on it, like this one does. )
About the inspiration forthe feature stamp : it was on August 1, 1946 when Arkansas Senator, William Fulbright's masterfully conceived Fulbright Scholarship program was signed into law by then-president, Harry Truman. As the PO's souvenir page for this stamp explains it, Senator Fulbright's scholarship program ". . . gave students and professionals the chance to live and study ( by paying for all expenses ) in another country. Fulbright, himself, described the program as an attempt 'to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs, and thereby increase the chance that nations will learn, at last, to live in peace and friendship'." At the time of this stamp's release, there were 130 nations participating in this Senator Fulbright's program. About the feature stamp, itself : this mesmerizing stamp gives us an almost surreal look at the human mind impact by the Fulbright Program. Over the person's right eye is a compass, symbolizing all direction in the world which the Fulbright Program reaches out to. And within the actual brain of this stamp model the various countries represent the global reach of what later came to be known as simply "the Student-Exchange Program." Theactual combo stamps : Let me now identify the 3 theme-related combostamps for you : Great Britain Scott # 660 : the 1971 University of Essex 9 pence stamp, from England's 1971 British Architecture set. One of England's newest of universities, the U.E. opened its doors in 1965. U.S. Scott # 1833 : the 1980 Learning Never Ends stampU.S. Scott # 2159 : the 1985 Public Education . . . this stamp was released to mark the 350 year anniversary of the 1642 opening of the Boston Latin School, which 5 years later, in 1647, would lead to Massachusetts newly established public school system, which was the basis for out current Public school system.Aboutthe first scanned image : on this cover's Side-A, Mrs. Gordon uses an attractive array of colors to ( 1 ) showcase a shot of the esteemed Senator Fulbright, with one eye --- like the stamp --- filled with ocean waves and the outlines of other countries ( 2 ) the human brain . . . with a graduation cap atop it . . . and accented with 6 major fields of academic study, to complement Mrs. Gordon's use of the words, "Brain Child" at the top of the cachet ( 3 ) and an institute of higher learning
About the second scanned image : on the cover's flip-side, Mrs. Gordon gives us a long list of Senator's Fulbright's accomplishments, both within the field of Education, as well as a quick summary of all his achievements, including his being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-president, Bill Clinton, in 1993.
About the cancellation site : fittingly, this cover was canceled in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where Senator Fulbright was raised, and where he was laid to rest upon his passing in 1995, at age 89.
About the Scarcity Factor : please note that only 12 of these hardly-ever-seen FDCs were made, thereby ranking it as one of the rarest of all the covers from her distinguished line of work.

Her first cachet was for the September 25, 1980Pacific Northwest Indian Masks ( Scott 1834-27 ), and herlast cachet was for the 2004 Cloudscapesissue ( Scott 3878 ). Most of her cachets were produced on hand-made envelopesthat measured about 7½ by 5¼ inches."
