This title is rarer than hens' teeth these days. Exterior as shown in photo. Text is clean and complete. Binding is shaken, with some looseness between several signatures near the middle, but everything is holding together. No torn, loose or missing pages. A real find for the right buyer/collector of 19th-century recipe books.Description: This is an antique book of recipes or "receipts, " medical cures, how-to instructions and practical advice. It was first published in 1874 (this is a 1900 edition) and intended primarily to aid farmers in their work, although a good many of the receipts were also meant for mechanics, merchants, manufacturers, etc, not to mention just plain folks like you and me. Remember, what we today consider elements of a “rural” or “farm” lifestyle – raising crops, caring for horses, home medical care, baking from scratch, etc. – were still part of everyday life for a great many Americans in the last quarter of the 19th century. The Preface states: The "Circle of Useful Knowledge" is a system of useful information, and contains hundreds of valuable receipts in the various departments of human effort, which can be relied upon, as they are tried receipts and have been procured from the most reliable sources, many of which have cost the author quite a sum for the right to publish them. They tell how to manage a farm, how to cook, all about wines and vinegar, how to fish and tan, how drugs and chemicals are composed, how to be your own doctor and nurse -- in short, everything connected with with everyday life is treated of in a concise, clear style that tells what you wish to know. Every housekeeper should have a copy of this work, as she will find in it all the latest improvements in the art of making home happy. Agriculturists, artists, manufacturers and mechanics of every class, every profession and vocation in life, can find much in this work that will be of interest and pecuniary benefit to them. It is a book that is useful in every house in the land, and no family should be without it, as it will save time and money, if its innumerable suggestions be known and followed. I take no responsibility, but I must admit some of them sound pretty darn yummy, like "Apple cake" and "Cocoanut pie" (others, like the "Tape-worm cure, " not so much). You'll probably want to stay away from the suggestion of using pure mercury as a filling for cavities in teeth. And if you try that recipe for keeping live fish in suspended animation for four weeks with brandy, I don't want to know about it, okay?
