Stephen Decatur, 1779 – 1820 (MilitaryBust Three-Quarters Right) // Battle Between The United States And The Macedonia(Intense Naval Battle, Eagle Below). Bronze, 70mm, uncirculated, no edgewording but some buff marks hidden on the edge only (to hide trimming marks? trial?), signed Adam Pietz on eitherside of the bust, very nice work.There are well more than ahundred auction records for the U.S. Mint Medal by Moritz Furst honoringDecatur but nary an odd listing or two of this Pietz r...endition of the famous navalbattle is to be found deep in the Newman Portal or beyond.Thismedal is part of a small collection of works by Adam Pietz that I will beoffering over time.Adam Pietz (1873-1961) was a sculptor, medalistengraver, and etcher. He was born in Offenbach, Germany, and movedto the U.S. in 1889 where he studied at the Chicago Art Institute (1892-1893), Drexel Institute (1894-1898), and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1899-1903). He was the assistant chief engraver at the U.S. Mint inPhiladelphia from 1927 to 1946. He is best known in numismatics for designingthe Iowa Centennial commemorative half dollar and numerous commemorative medalsfound on the Mint List. Reportedly some of his private works and personalmedals were struck at the Philadelphia Mint
