He was born in Offenbach, Germany, and movedto the U.S. in 1889 where he studied at the Chicago Art Institute (1892-1893), Drexel Institute (1894-1898), and the Pennsylvania Aca...demy of the Fine Arts(1899-1903). He was the assistant chief engraverat the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia from 1927 to 1946. He is best known innumismatics for designing the Iowa Centennial commemorative half dollar andnumerous commemorative medals found on the Mint List. Reportedly some of hisprivate works and personal medals were struck at the Philadelphia Mint
