Antique Brass Microscope James W. Queen, 3 Lens Late 1800s 19th Century
Item History & Price
It comes with THREE LENS pieces, marked lens box, and one brass lens holder. One is a basic lens and is unmarked. This basic lens provides minimal magnification. The 2nd lens says "E. Leitz 6" on it. The Leitz comes with an original snap box that is marked. The 3rd lens is a Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. lens that says "Oil 1 mm 1.9 m 1.80 N.A. (I do not know what all that means). This lot also comes with a brass lens screw-top lens holder that houses the B&L lens and says "1.9" on it. I have included pictures of what the different lens' do to a human hair. As you can see, the B&L lens gives the best magnification. Please note that what you see with your eyes when you look at it is better than what I can take a picture of with a cell phone. The specimen was being held in a plastic postcard sleeve as well! :-) It's a great piece that I purchased at an antique auction and it's more recent home was near Chicago. Measurements: When microscope is standing totally vertical it is 12 1/2" tall. There is not a wood box for the microscope but it will come extremely well protected for shipping with ample insurance. Shipping includes $20 handling charge for packaging and insurance plus the calculated USPS charge. Please feel free to ask any questions.
Here's some information about James W. Queen & Co. from American Artifacts web site "Queen, born in 1813, began working for the McAllister Brothers, in Philadelphia, as aboy, around 1825. From 1836 to 1852 he was a partner in the McAllister business, leaving finally to start his own company to sell optical instruments. While Queen & Co. sold a great variety of microscopes by other makers, their catalogs and other literature emphatically suggested that they also made microscopes...the company certainly was a powerful influence on the developing American microscope trade.Queen died in 1890 and the company continued into the 20th century, offering all sorts of scientific instruments, magic lanterns, and ophthalmic apparatus."
