This quality spyglass or monocular is signed " Adams Fleet Str London " engraved in fine script. George Adams And George Adams Junior are considered one of the finest instrument makers of the 18th Century and appointed royal optician to his majesty king George III.
This fine example is most likely to be the work of Dudley Adams ( 1762 - 1830 ) and dates around C 1790 - C 1810. D. Adams was the optician to the Prince of Wales , the instr...ument also features the Fleur- de- Lys and the Georgian royal crest. The monocular has seven drawers and is silvered to a high standard.
The instrument measures 8.5 cm extended and only 2.5 cm retracted , the diameter of the objective lens is 5 cm.
The lens does have some light scratches in the center ( just about visible to the naked eye) and the end has had a few knocks , also their is a few holes in the leather ( see pics ) The draws operate smoothly and the instrument does focus and provides a clear image . Overall in good condition considering its age . I have not cleaned the silver and will leave that decision to the final buyer.
This quality Georgian monocular should appeal to the connoisseur collector of optical instruments.
