ANTIQUE INDIAN SILVER WATER JUG AND CUPS SET, ART DECO, EARLY 20TH C. This is a unique silver water jug with four cups from India, made in the first half of the 20th century. A maker’s mark consisting of crossed hammers with the initials TM sit on the base of the jug and cups. The mark is currently unidentified, but our research is ongoing. Beneath this, on the jug and cups sit the marks T.97 and T.100, supp...osedly denoting a silver purity of 97% and 100%, respectively. Stylised in the art deco design with a frosted finish, the jug features a woman blowing a horn, likely a sringa (an ancient Indian musical instrument). The sringa often is played during celebratory rituals and formal events. The woman, standing upon a sun, resembles Tapati, the nymph daughter of the Sun God, Surya. Hindu mythology tells the story of Tapati and her admirer, King, Samvarana. While hunting one day, the King saw her in the woods. He instantly fell in love with her and declared this to her. She told him that it was not her he had to prove his love to, but her father, and for twelve, long days he worshipped the sun. Surya saw the King was honest and worthy and presented his daughter to him. The tale is from Treta Yuga, which is the second of the four yugas (the chronicles of mankind in Hinduism).
