The drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid watermarked paper, depicts a religious scene, showing Jesus on the way to Golgotha. The artists depicted the scene where Christ fell under the cross and Veronica offfered him her veil to wipe his forhead. The image of his face miraculously impressed upon it. This piece of cloth became known as the "Veil of Veronica". Left, the Hol...y Virgin faints, sustained by Mary Magdalena and Saint John.
A Roman soldier pulles the rope around the neck of Jesus to make hime stand up. Right the Romans are taking the other two convict to the mount for crucifixion.Left, the Jewish high priests are leaving Jerusalem through the city gate, also heading towards the mount to witness the execution.This drawing, most lukely, was a preparatory study for a larger scale painting.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Italian-Genovese School. Further research should be done to refine this attribution.
Period : ca. 1630-1640.

Condition : Good. Some scattered dirt throughout. Backside : traces of a support. Unframed.
